A mournful horn marks the moment that Rhapsody of the Seas begins her ambling adieu to Sydney Harbour. I’m happily ensconced (even in somewhat drizzly weather) under what’s probably the only 45-metre add-on verandah ever to be opened by Her Majesty the Queen. Designed by the Opera House’s original architect, Joern Utzon, it features what’s touted as the best concrete ever produced in Australia. Fondle it’s highly polished finish and you’ll see why. A misty sea haze adds to the drama holding myself and other diners transfixed. This definitely calls for bubbles, and the Chandon NV Brut Rose ($65/bottle) rises to the occasion. If you’re not here for the well priced pre-theatre menu ($38/2 courses), avoid that crowd completely by arriving around 7.45pm. However there’s a lot to be said for watching daylight fade over a well-stocked sharing Antipasto Plate ($28), featuring beautiful white anchovies, Spanish chorizo, soft jambon and appetite-inducing bresaola. Spaghetti with Prawns, Garlic, Chilli, Anchovies and Parsley ($26.50) is prawn-dense, but quickly forgotten in favour of The Veggie ($21), a generous board of roast mushroom, ricotta and rosemary pizza, souped up by chilli flakes. Throw in a Studio Garden Salad ($8) before a casual harbour side promenade into the waiting night…
