It has been three decades since the legendary Baz Luhrmann directed his era-defining production of La Bohème. Now, Opera Australia is celebrating his extraordinary career.

On June 23 and 24, for two nights only, audiences will be able to experience a musical showcase from his most successful films at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.

The showcase will star four of Australia’s most talented singers, Tim Draxl, Alinta Chidzey, Ryan Gonzalez, and Phoebe Panaretos, along with the Opera Australia Orchestra. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness the music from Luhrmann’s movies brought to life in a unique blend of drama, romance, and opulence.

Tim Draxl returns to Opera House for Strictly Baz Luhrmann

Stage and screen star Tim Draxl will return to the Opera House after his recent, highly acclaimed performance in Sunset Boulevard. He will be joined by musical theatre stars Alinta Chidzey, Ryan Gonzalez and Phoebe Panaretos, who will be making their Opera House debuts.

Each is familiar with Luhrmann’s work. Phoebe was hand-picked by Luhrmann to star as Fran in the world premiere of Strictly Ballroom: The Musical, while Alinta and Ryan played Satine and Santiago in the Australian tour of Moulin Rouge.

Talented conductor Vanessa Scammell will lead the talented cast and orchestra through a selection of music from throughout Luhrmann’s cinematic career, including his widely celebrated Red Curtain Trilogy, Strictly Ballroom (1992), Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge (2001). It will also include memorable songs from his more recent soundtracks, such as Australia (2008), The Great Gatsby (2013) and Elvis (2022).

Audiences will enjoy a combination of favourites including Kissing You, Time After Time, Love is the Air, Come What May, Young Hearts Run Free, One Day I’ll Fly Away, and Can’t Help Falling in Love.

“In a first for the Company, we’re paying tribute to the great Baz Luhrmann, who directed some wonderful operas for us,” Opera Australia CEO Fiona Allan said.

“It’s an opportunity to showcase the talent and versatility of our exceptional Opera Australia Orchestra, alongside a superb cast of singers. It’s been a pleasure to work with director Mark Sutcliffe to design a truly entertaining evening for family and friends to enjoy at Sydney Opera House.”
