Soon after 10am, the market is bustling. The regulars are all in and there are plenty of curious new faces.

There’s a strong feeling of good humour, and live music adds warmth to the market as customers browse the stalls.

“I love this market,” says Nisha from Aussie Woodcraft Designs.

“It has great community feeling.”

Located in a modern setting in the heart of Alexandria, South Sydney Markets has all sorts of things on offer.

There’s a huge range of gourmet foods to choose from. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, gorgeous organic cheeses and plump Italian olives, pasta, fresh bread, meats, wine – all the ingredients for a lovely Sunday dinner.

For those who are feeling peckish, food is available at several stalls from 10am, serving great Indian, Asian and Turkish foods. Don’t forget to try a flavourful Mayan coffee.

Or if you’re just after something sweet, why not try a caramel slice, baklava, or one of the many cakes and strudels?

To keep the kids entertained, there’s a jumping castle, a petting zoo where they can pat the baby animals, and face painting every week.

“We like the fact that it’s a friendly, family environment,” says Ester from the Country Valley Fresh Foods stall.

Dogs are welcome, too, as long as they’re kept on a leash, and for them grooming is available.

There are plenty more stalls to browse throughout the day, offering an assortment of items: hand-painted ceramic bowls and plates, homewares, kitchen utensils.

There’s even jewellery, cosmetics, quality second-hand goods, books, electronics, all sorts of bric-a-brac, and plenty more.

It’s almost too much to get through in one day!
