Souk in the City Turns One!

Souk in the City Turns One!

Last week I had all of my senses stimulated by the first birthday celebrations of Souk in the City. If you’re unfamiliar with the name, it is a rather a sumptuous French Moroccan restaurant tucked away in the St Margaret’s Complex in Surry Hills.

Beginning with a sensual black carpet arrival complete with a shower of rose petals, I ventured into the fragrant restaurant, decorated with Moroccan furnishings, and artfully aranged sacks and plates of produce. To the sound of live Moroccan music, I sampled Moroccan delights like the delicious B’Stilla Fassia, filo pasty filled with fragrant almond chicken and served with delicate orange saffron sauce. Traditionally dressed staff brought around sweet treats like stuffed dates, and guests helped themselves to the gorgeously lit wood fired bread and tapas bar.

As I type this, looking at the work of the Moroccan henna tattooist still fading from my hand, I am hungry for those big spicy flavours again. Watch this space for a review in coming weeks, or check out Omar Majdi and his team for yourselves online at www.soukinthecity.com or in person at St Margaret’s, Shop 5, ‘Henry’, 431 Bourke Street, Surry Hills.
