Solar saving at Bondi Pavilion

Solar saving at Bondi Pavilion
Waverly Council has taken a step towards reducing their carbon footprint, by installing four solar water heaters on Bondi Pavilion.
Over ten years, the heaters will save over $11,500 in energy costs and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases by more than 175 tonnes.
Waverly Mayor Sally Betts said the pavilion needed to become more energy efficient as it regularly uses high levels of energy throughout the year
“The solar hot water systems will provide free hot water to the councils life guards and Bondi Park staff who use a lot of hot water from showering as a result of their outdoor work,’’ said Mayor Betts.
The whole project cost around $14,800, and has a ten-year life span. By the time the heaters need to be replaced in 2021, the council aims to have reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent.
The heaters will be very visible on the 83-year-old pavilion to passers-by. The Pavilion is heritage listed for its aesthetic qualities but Council said they are not concerned with changing the appearance of the building. Rather the council is keen to demonstrate its commitment to renewable energy sources.
“It is one of the aims of the council to encourage residents and visitors to look at using solar heated water and solar powered electricity in their homes,’’ said a council spokesperson.
