Ruby L’otel *UPDATED*
Image: With most people’s finances tighter than ever, it’s nice to see specials abound at venues like this truly local, twenty-first century Australian inner city pub. It’s my local too, so Tuesdays are diarised for Wagyu Burgers ($9.95); Thursdays for mammoth kilo serves of meaty Baby Back Pork Ribs ($19.90). Wednesdays are now ‘2 for 1 Curry Night’.

With most people’s finances tighter than ever, it’s nice to see specials abound at venues like this truly local, twenty-first century Australian inner city pub. It’s my local too, so Tuesdays are diarised for Wagyu Burgers ($9.95); Thursdays for mammoth kilo serves of meaty Baby Back Pork Ribs ($19.90). Wednesdays are now ‘2 for 1 Curry Night’. The three offerings of the ‘Punjabi by nature’ Chef Raja Anand are all flavoursome and authentic – well except for heat. Some guests will appreciate him keeping them mild – the rest of us should ask for more chilli when ordering. Regardless, I enjoyed his tasty Vegetarian Korma Curry ($17) with springy green beans, unctuous sweet pumpkin and beautifully cooked chickpeas, perfectly matched by a schooner of Bulmers Cider ($7). Massaman Beef Curry ($18.90) impressed with fall-apart hunks of beef in a rich sauce. I dined on a Tuesday so I’ll hazard that his slightly unbalanced, famous Bengal Chicken Curry ($17.50) would be perfect by Wednesday (curry’s always better the next day), especially with a schooner of Hahn Super Dry ($5.20). The well-protected back deck is a lovely place to sink a few as you enjoy real curries resplendent with fresh herbs, curry leaves and star anise – not your average pub grub!
