Rozelle Bay marina proposal raises hackles at Council
The future of the Bays Precinct Masterplan is less clear than ever, after the approved developer for Rozelle Bay submitted a preliminary environmental assessment to the Department of Planning.
But Leichhardt Council has already indicated its opposition to the development, requesting a meeting with the NSW Government to express its opposition to the plan.
The existing marina in Rozelle Bay was built for the 2000 Olympics. Sydney Superyacht Marina Pty Ltd was announced as the preferred proponent to redevelop the facility in August by the then-Ports and Waterways Minister, Joe Tripodi.
Due to the site’s status as being of State Significance and its value of $31 million, the application will be assessed by the Department of Planning as a Part 3A.
The focus of the redevelopment will be on land, with two buildings covering a total of 3,500 square metres, and parking for 100 vehicles. The redeveloped facility will have berths for 24 Superyachts, a reduction on the current number of berths so the marina can accommodate larger yachts.
In a mayoral minute distributed at the December Council meeting, Leichhardt Mayor Jamie Parker described the application as “very concerning”. He noted it pre-empted “the proper master planning process for the Bays Precinct which Council has fought for over the past years”, and called for a more strategic approach to planning in the area.
