Queers are revolting

“They say queers are revolting,” Heidi Claus told the crowd.

“Well they’re damn right we’re revolting, and we won’t stop until we get same-sex marriage rights.”

Claus was just one of the thousand people who marched through Sydney’s streets on May 15 calling for same-sex marriage. Organiser Rachel Evans said attendance had almost doubled at this protest, the second in a series of rallies planned for this year.

In the week leading up to the protest the State Government passed its new Relationship Registry Act, a bill that allows same-sex couples to register their relationships and that guarantees equal de-facto rights.

There were mixed feelings about the legislation at the rally, with some welcoming the change and others criticising it for not going far enough. “We want equal rights, not to register our relationships like you’d register your dog or your car!” said one speaker.

But the organisers remain optimistic and presented a petition with 100,000 signatures to Matthew Roberston of the Greens.

Recently pre-selected by Socialist Alliance for the Senate in the upcoming federal election, Evans asked the public to show support for same-sex marriage at the next protest planned for August 14.
