Public art under the freeway

A dark spot under the Western Distributor in Ultimo has been transformed into a piece of public art.

Independent Councillor Marcelle Hoff said she was happy to see the site rivatlised. “Aspire By Warren Langley features glowing golden trees, turning the unattractive area below the freeway into an eye-catching outdoor gallery,” Cr Hoff said.

Aspire is the successful proposal for “Life Under the Freeway”, a public art project which started with local community workshops in 2000.

Mr Langley has designed the work to match the scale of the site and be visible by both pedestrians and traffic. Economic and ecological sustainability were considered in the selection of materials and light sources.

“This project is a real demonstration of creative community ideas inspiring public art that can be enjoyed by all,” Ms Hoff said

The project also allows for a local emerging artist to be mentored by the project artist, building skills and confidence in public art.
