Princess Coco Chocolaterie

Plonking yourself on a high-backed, purple throne in the midst of this gold-tinged chocolate salon, your eyes are immediately drawn to the elaborate chocolate fountain in the front window. Hypnotised by the motion of amber trumpets pouring (and catching) endless streams of chocolate, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d woken up in the middle of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Peering into this kitchen though, you’ll find it’s Rika Shiina (rather than Gene Wilder) making the magic. Before you delve into her wild dessert creations, like dainty Petit Fours ($10) arranged Tetris-style on a gleaming gold square, or an even better glass jar of deconstructed Strawberry Cheesecake ($9), do check out the savoury eats. Crusty French Baguettes ($8.50) impress most with roast beef; over mild Keen’s Curry Powder-style curried chicken, bound by mayonnaise. Even late in the day, all dine-in meals – including a flaky, better-than-most Quiche ($8.50) – are accompanied by an appetising tangle of leaves set off by tangy mustard vinaigrette. While Rika’s visually spectacular creations are undoubtedly the highlight, Valhrona dark chocolate comes up beautifully in a steaming mug of La Tradition ($6.50) hot chocolate. If you’re not keen on rich, throaty chocolate, my dining companion also swore by his milky, malty Jivara ($6.50).
