Police Searching For Gunman After Fatal Surry Hills Shooting and Porsche Fire
A man was fatally shot on a busy inner-city street on Friday night, with police linking a nearby care fire — a Porsche set ablaze – to the incident, the suspected getaway vehicle.
Emergency crews were called to Baptist Street, near Cleveland Street in Surry Hills, around 7:45pm on November 22 after emergency services received multiple reports of gunshots.
Paramedics treated a man, believed to be in his 30s, at the scene. The man died shortly after.
Less than an hour after the shooting, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) responded to a fire on Kensington Road, Kensington, just before 8pm, where they found a Porsche ablaze.
FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said it took crews 20 minutes to extinguish the flames.
Police established a crime scene, closing Cleveland Street between South Dowling and Elizabeth Street in both directions. Buses were diverted, and the public was advised to take alternative routes.
Lucas, who was having dinner at the time, told ABC News he heard “four or five gunshots.”
“Normally I thought that’s firecrackers but this time it seemed a bit peculiar. We concluded that it was gunshots. It had to be gunshots,” he said.
“Then I started getting texts there was a gunman running around.”

NSW Police said in a statement last night that initial inquiries allege the shooting, and the car fire were linked.
“This is an outrageous incident and demonstrated a high level of reckless indifference to the public who were around at that time,” Superintendent Garner said to media. “It was definitely a targeted attack.”
No arrests have been made at this time.
