The Vulcan Hotel has consistently provided comfortable, quality accommodation for travellers to Sydney since 1894. This distinctive heritage-listed building stands on the corner of Wattle and Mary Ann Streets, just on the outskirts of the CBD and a stone’s throw from dozens of attractions, educational institutions, entertainment precincts, and major organisations.
A popular pub and music venue, hosting jazz artists and indy bands for many years, The Vulcan was given a new life in 2002 when Carol and Harvey Ord purchased the building. It was given a multi-million dollar refurbishment; the interiors were gutted and renovated and the outside was repainted, all faithfully retaining its original heritage features.
Four years later, the hotel acquired two adjacent terrace houses, knocked them down and built an extension. This added 16 rooms, a brand new cafe/dining room, reception area and leafy courtyard. The new extension also included a lift which provided easier access to the upper floors of the hotel.
Their dedication was recognised in 2008 when The Vulcan Hotel was awarded the City of Sydney Business Award for Best Boutique Hotel in Sydney. The hotel currently has a four-star rating, the highest attainable for a boutique hotel of its kind.
Each room is comfortable and modern yet reflects the character of the hotel’s past. All rooms have an ensuite, air-con, bar fridge, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, TV, and tea and coffee making facilities. Wifi is free and breakfast, which is served in the cafe, is included. Recently, the hotel installed solar panels on its roof.
Accommodation ranges from a small, modest room for one guest through to premium accommodation for up to four people. Rooms may include a desk, more facilities, a balcony, or, at the literal top end (The Loft) a kitchenette, dining area, mini bar, extra space and views of the neighbourhood.
A lot of its guests are attracted to The Vulcan Hotel because of its proximity to TAFE, the International Convention Centre, Sydney University, University of Technology Sydney, the ABC, Sydney Lyric, Darling Harbour and many other large businesses and attractions.
Guests may be parents visiting or helping their kids settle into tertiary education; business people attending a conference or work event; lecturers; people coming to Sydney for a show or festival; travellers who prefer a more quiet, low key place to spend the night.
The Vulcan Hotel offers happy hour in its bar from 5pm to 7pm which is open to the public, but its focus is on providing quality, peaceful accommodation with excellent service to its guests.
