Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit By Light Rail

A pedestrian has died after being hit by the light rail in the CBD.

Emergency services were called to Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, around 1:15 on Thursday afternoon, where a man believed to be in his 40s, was trapped under the carriage.

Police used tarps and tents to block the public’s view while they worked to free the victim with a hydraulic floor jack.

Paramedics attempted to treat the man, but he was declared deceased at the scene.

He is yet to be identified.

A crime scene has been established at the site by NSW Police.

In a statement this afternoon, Howard Collins from Transport for NSW said TfNSW and Transdev were working closely with authorities to investigate the incident.

“NSW Police is leading the investigation into the incident and we will ensure everything is done with the operator to help establish the full circumstances surrounding this extremely distressing incident.

“Our sympathies are with the man’s family and we also extend our thanks to the emergency services personnel, staff and bystanders who responded.”

Still too early to speculate, police say

“At this stage, it is too early to provide any views or speculate on the cause of the incident,” said Police Inspector Anderson Lessing.

“We will work closely with the Rail Regulator and with Transdev, the operator of the service, to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted.”

Support services are being provided for the light rail passengers on board at the time of the incident.

Transport for NSW confirmed that L2 and L3 light rail services are not operating between Moore Park and Central. Services are continuing between Moore Park and Randwick, and Moore Park and Juniors Kingsford.

Passengers have been urged to take alternate transport or delay their travel.

The incident comes only two years after 16-year-old Kyra Dulguime died after being trapped under a carriage in May 2023.
