A 23-year-old man is in a critical condition with significant head injuries at St Vincent’s Hospital after being allegedly punched in a brawl on Oxford Street, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head.

At about 12:35am on Saturday morning, emergency services attended a scene on Oxford Street following reports of a brawl.

Nearby security guards attempted to disperse a group of several men, who then fled the scene shortly after police officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command arrived.

Following a short foot pursuit, three men were arrested nearby and taken to Surry Hills Police Station. All three men were charged with affray.

Two men involved in Oxford Street brawl to face court on Sunday

Two of the men, aged 19 and 20, were refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday. The third man, aged 20, was granted conditional bail and will appear at Downing Centre Local Court on May 5.

Paramedics treated the injured man at the scene before he was taken to hospital.

Police are appealing to anyone who has further information or dashcam footage of the incident to contact Surry Hills police or Crime Stoppers.

BOCSAR data shows steady trends of nighttime non-domestic assaults

According to the crime map from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR), rates of nighttime non-domestic assaults on roads and footpaths in the Sydney local government area have remained stable over the last two years.

Data released by BOCSAR last month also showed that, while rates of non-domestic assault across NSW dropped during lockdown periods over the last two years, they returned to their pre-pandemic levels once restrictions were lifted in October.
