NSW Premier announces $1.7 billion investment into emergency health services

In a press conference today, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet announced a “significant investment” of $1.7 billion to supply NSW with 2000 more paramedics, as well as additional support staff, nurses and doctors. The Premier said that the investment will be spaced over 4 years, giving NSW access to over 2128 additional staff in order to rise to the demand caused by the pandemic.
“We know that here and in our state and around the country our health systems are under growing pressure” Perrottet said at the press conference. “This significant investment will ensure that NSW has more paramedics than anywhere else in the country.”
The NSW government stated their commitment to addressing the strains the pandemic has had on the state health system, as NSW Treasurer Matt Kean said “this announcement shows we are continuing to provide record levels of investment in these frontline healthcare workers and the critical services they provide.”
Health union supports extra staffing for emergency health workers
In a Facebook post today, Secretary for the Health Services Union Gerard Hayes says that he’s “immensely pleased that the NSW Government has responded to our calls.”
“This win belongs to every HSU paramedic who took a stand – who campaigned, lobbied, took industrial action – all to benefit our community.”
Perrotett announced that “close to 800” paramedics are to be expected in the next year, with the total announced numbers of staff reaching 2000 in the next 4 years.
