NSW Drivers To Receive $100 Rego Discount From Today

From September 1, over 4.4 million drivers across New South Wales will pay $100 less to register their private vehicle, with motorcyclists paying $80 less. 

The one-off deduction to the annual motor vehicle tax will apply to car registrations with an effective renewal date from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, with those eligible having the discount automatically applied to their registration fees.

Rego Discount Intended To Ease Cost-Of-Living Pressures

According to the Government, the discount is intended to put money back into the pockets of families facing ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

“The Minns Labor Government is committed to making life easier for commuters and our registration discount is a clear example of that,” said Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison.

“We know it’s not cheap to get from A to B, which is why we’re making sure drivers, motorcyclists and commuters on public transport can save some of their hard-earned money. Our registration discount is automatically applied, meaning there’s no homework, just savings, so families can spend money on their loved ones instead.”

In September alone, 360,000 privately owned light vehicles due for registration will benefit from the discount. As for drivers whose rego was due in July or August, the $100 discount will be applied when their registration is renewed in 2027. Those who pay their registration for a short-term period will have a pro-rata rate deducted from their motor vehicle tax for each 6-month period.

Importantly, the discount does not apply to business vehicles, private trailers and caravans, plant vehicles, heavy vehicles, conditionally registered vehicles, or vehicles currently receiving a registration concession, discount, refund, or rebate.

The registration fee relief is accompanied by a $50 weekly toll cap for 12 months, the removal of toll administrative fees, and the freezing of Opal fares at 2025 prices for the next 12 months.
