War on nightlife not popular

The Sydney Morning Herald ran a poll last week on Council’s desire for venues in entertainment precincts to close at midnight. To the question: “Do you agree that pubs in Sydney’s CBD should close at midnight?” 69 per cent of 8,221 readers voted no and 31 per cent, yes.

It’s state election time already

Candidates and hopefuls are already manoeuvring behind the scenes in the lead up to the state election next March. Liberal hopefuls are jockeying for position and it seems Councillor Shayne Mallard will not be running this time. Clover Moore is hosting a fund-raising “Cocktails for Clover non-party party” in Parliament House in October. Tickets are $120, or $250 for a gold ticket. “Show your support for our favourite thinking, doing politician,” says the invitation. The Labor Party seems to be lagging. Local members had no information about the preselection and referred us to state HQ in Sussex Street, who told us nothing.
