Cannabis raid
Police found 491 hydroponically grown cannabis plans in a terrace on Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst during a raid on Saturday. A 51-year-old man was arrested at McGrath Hill, who police allege has links to two more cannabis plantations in McGrath Hill and Lower Portland, both also raided on Saturday.
Very little research
The University of Sydney will build a world-leading nanoscience research facility following a $40 million contribution from the Federal Government. The ‘Australian Institute for Nanoscience’ will research quantum communications technology, a bionic eye implant, and revolutionary optical instruments for galactic exploration.
Two World Cup wins for Australia
Two sisters from the inner west set a world record for television watching on Thursday last week, watching coverage of the World Cup for 87 hours nonstop. The event took place at Star City’s Sports Theatre as part of a promotion for a television recording system.
UTS gets a facelift
Sydney’s University of Technology, has commissioned the construction of a new building on its City campus by world-renowned eclectic architect Frank Gehry. UTS, voted as housing ‘Sydney’s ugliest building’ by Sydney Morning Herald readers in 2006, will spend $150 million on the project, due to be completed in late 2013. The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, is named after a Chinese business leader who donated $25 million.
Timor’s José down at the school hall
Nobel Peace Laureate and President of East Timor, Dr José Ramos-Horta, will give a public address at Sydney University’s Great Hall this afternoon. This is the President’s first state visit to Australia.
