Pub brawl victim dies in hospital
A man assaulted in a brawl outside Star Hotel last week died in hospital last Wednesday. Van Chi Dang, 31 year-old from Greenacre was on life-support after being stuck to the ground in a fight between two groups of men. Police charged a 21-year-old Cabramatta man with affray. Police have posted CCTV footage on YouTube in a public appeal to identify witnesses, and the perpetrator of the fatal blow.
Mayoral summit
The Mayors of Australia’s 12 largest cities delivered a position paper on urban sustainability to representatives of Federal Parliament last Thursday. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore is pushing for change in legislation slowing the rollout of efficient ‘trigeneration’ energy; federal funding for a Sydney cycle network; support for sustainability in the Green Square development; and “urgent” funding for an 8.3km light rail corridor. The Federal Government’s National Urban Policy should be launched later this year.
New goals for school students
Students who set and pursue ‘personal bests’ achieve better results than those who compare themselves against others, a new University of Sydney study has confirmed. Nearly 2000 Australian high school students were assessed over the course of a year. Those who pursued personal bests were significantly more likely to achieve at a higher level, complete homework, participate in class, enjoy school, hold positive educational aspirations, and persist at school tasks longer.
Police raid an Alexandria house
Police charged a 38-year-old man with allegedly supplying ‘ice’ and possessing prohibited weapons after raiding an Alexandria home last Thursday night. Police found an allegedly stolen Porsche, which was used in the armed robbery of a Glebe bottle shop five days prior. A stolen cash drawer was found in the car. In the house, police say they found a stun gun, a baton, ‘ice’ and large amounts of chemicals they allege was used to manufacture the drug.
