With no signage protruding onto a little side street, it’s easy to overlook Chippendale’s best bite. Much thought has gone into the interesting and seasonally appropriate specials list, which changes weekly. The cooler weather has been celebrated with a glorious Autumn Salad ($18) of quince, chestnuts, pancetta, king brown mushrooms and colourful leaves. It’s enough to make you forget summer has been and gone for another year, particularly if you team it with a ripper 2008 Yealands Gewurtztraminer ($8/glass) from Marlborough, New Zealand. Later in the week I returned for another blackboard special, a Game Terrine ($18) presented with cornichons and toast. Rippling with pheasant, pork, rabbit and duck, I only wished for a dab of something sweet – perhaps my own fault, as the Brown Brothers Proscecco ($8/glass) I chose was bone dry. My focus on the specials doesn’t mean the regular lunch menu isn’t impressive too!  The Balsamic Braised Corn Beef Sanger ($13) is amazing, as are the tapas plates from moist Zucchini and Fetta Fritters ($10) to pleasantly fishy Salt Cod Croquettes ($14). Even the sweets hold joy – a seasonal Quince Tart ($4) boasted incredibly short pastry, though my accompanying Hot Chocolate ($3.50) was watery. Service is well intentioned – so look at the art and enjoy the downtime.
