Mel Gibson Named Among Trump’s Hollywood “Special Ambassadors”

Incoming President Donald Trump has announced Sydney’s own Mel Gibson as one of three “Special Ambassadors” to Hollywood, with the hopes of returning the city to its golden years.
Posting to Truth Social on Thursday, Trump also named Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone as ambassadors, although what their role will entail is not entirely clear yet.
“It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone, to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California,” he wrote.
“They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE! These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!”
All three actors have declared their support for Trump over the years, with Gibson telling paparazzi in October what he thought of Kamala Harris.
“I know what it’ll be like if we let her in, and that ain’t good. Miserable track record- appalling track record. No policies to speak of. And she’s got the IQ of a fence post.”
Gibson says role is his “duty as a citizen”
Raised in Sydney and studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Gibson fell out of favour with Hollywood after he was arrested after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in 2006. During his arrest, he was reported to have gone on an anti-Semitic and racist rant, where he yelled that “the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”
He was also recorded casually using homophobic and racist remarks in 2010, and was charged with misdemeanor battery against his ex-girlfriend the following year.
His career made a comeback in 2016 when he directed Hacksaw Ridge, which he filmed in Sydney, and won him two Academy Awards.
In a statement to Variety, Gibson said he was just as clueless as the rest of us about the position.
“I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can,” he said. “Any chance the position comes with an ambassador’s residence?”
Trump’s inauguration is set for next Tuesday.
