Meeting of minds for local activists

It may have started out small, but the organisers of last Sunday’s meeting of key action groups across the Leichhardt LGA hope it will eventually lead to co-ordinated action against State Government planning decisions.

According to Forum Chair Sandra Jones, the meeting was unique in bringing together local action groups to share common concerns and plan united campaigns prior to the forthcoming state and federal elections. These groups included EcoTransit, No Aircraft Noise and Friends of Callan Park, alongside local campaigns against the Metro, Iron Cove Bridge extension, and White Bay development.

Local councillors in attendance included Leichhardt Mayor Jamie Parker, Deputy Mayor Michele McKenzie, Liberal councillor Gordon Weiss and independent John Stamolis. “I think it was wonderful the community groups throughout the Leichhardt LGA came together – it was their initiative,” said Cr Weiss. “The workshop showed there were a lot of themes emerging, especially the absence of effective planning and community consultation from the State Government.”
