Maroubra Junction revitalisation now underway as construction begins

By ERIN MODARO

Construction on a new revitalised junction in Maroubra has officially begun, bringing a new green space for public use. The new space will be constructed along Anzac Parade and Maroubra Road, after the area was flagged by the community as needing revitalisation.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said that the project is the “first step towards cleaning up the area”.

“Maroubra Junction is a bustling centre but sections are tired, uninviting and in need of a makeover” Cr Parker said.

“After consulting with our community, what Council has overwhelmingly heard is that there is a strong desire to improve the experience of public spaces around Maroubra Junction.”

Over 1000 trees to be planted

The Maroubra Junction project includes new areas of public space, tree planting, landscaping upgrades, and new benches and seating. Randwick Council has said that more than 1000 new plants will be introduced into the space.

They also announced that the plants will be predominantly native plants that don’t require much water. Transportation has also been brought into the design of the new space, with the masterplan stating that public transport and parking has been taken into consideration.

Planting of the greenery has begun this month, and is estimated to take between six to eight weeks. The central plaza will be constructed in 2023.

The upgrades have been made possible through the NSW government’s ‘Your High Street’ program, which gives local council’s grants to improve functionality of high streets.

The ‘Maroubra Junction Oasis’ project received $1 million from the NSW government for its revitalisation.

The construction of the Maroubra Junction upgrades has begun soon after another street revitalisation project in Kingsford began earlier in the month. Other locations included in the ‘Your High Street Program’ include Wardell Road in Dulwich Hill and Phillip Street in Parramatta.
