A man has been shot in the leg by police during an incident yesterday at Bunnerong Road in Matraville, after reports were made that he assaulted two women.

Police were called outside a Woolworths at around 4:30pm yesterday where they attempted to arrest the man before he pulled out a knife. The man was then tasered and shot by police.

NSW Police say the gunshot wound to his leg was treated at the scene before he was taken to St Vincents Hospital in a stable condition.

Police commissioner speaks out

Acting Assistant Commissioner Martin Fileman told reporters after the incident that “it’s extremely terrifying when events like this unfold”.

“It’s an extremely dangerous and serious situation where police don’t know what’s going to happen.

“As we saw today, it can turn on a dime – it can change very quickly,” Fileman said.

NSW Police say a critical investigation is underway into the incident.

“A critical incident team comprised of officers from Inner West Police Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm.”
