Local actor wins at festival

Bondi resident Richard Carwin returned to the Sydney stage on Friday night after picking up $5000 and an agent as the winner of the inaugural Screenwise Speed Auditioning program at the Dungog Film Festival.

Carwin last month picked up a leading role in the long-running late night horror show Theatre of Blood, which plays every Friday night at 11pm at the Newtown Theatre. He plays several characters, including John Marshall – an international man of mystery – who becomes embroiled in a psycho-sexual relationship while on a mission in the exotic far East.

He entered the Screenwise Speed Auditioning competition, run for the first time as part of the Dungog Film Festival in the small town north of Newcastle.

Ten finalists, aged 18-30, were chosen from hundreds of applicants and provided a two-minute script to be performed and recorded for judging during the festival.

Last Saturday, a panel of industry experts that included Cameron Daddo, Brendan Cowell, Jeremy Sims and CEO of Paramount Pictures Mike Selwyn gave his winning performance the thumbs up.
