This Thursday May 3rd fuzzed-out American stoner rock stalwarts Fu Manchu are touring to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their 1997 classic The Action is Go. The influential quartet have been credited with giving rise to stoner rock groups such as Kyuss and Monster Magnet with their catchy, no nonsense rock & roll. They’re supported by Black Cobra and Matt Sonic & The High Times. At the Oxford Arts Factory you can catch Melbourne indie darlings Husky who’ve had a wonderfully successful 2011 which saw them win Triple J’s Push Over competition, record a debut album in Los Angeles and tour the US. They’re back in Australia to tour the pants off themselves in anticipation of their upcoming album release. They’ve been receiving rave reviews for their singles so far and it’ll be a unique opportunity to see a band ready to blow up.
Friday May 4th local pop-country six-piece Briscoe are playing at FBi Social to promote their latest single release Day Job. The group consists of members that have been involved with prominent local acts such as Kid Confucious, Ngaiire and Gin Wigmore and they play beautifully crafted blues and country tinged pop songs that are dreamy and soulful and easy on the ears. Catch them alongside Bloods, Mushu and Lily So & Co.
On Saturday May 5th one of the most coveted and influential dance acts for the past 25 years Orbital are playing at the Metro Theatre. Influenced by electro and punk rock, the duo broke the rules by incorporating live improvisation into their shows and this saw them become one of the most recognised British electronic acts during the 1990s. On this visit to our shores they are bringing a huge visual component to compliment their music. The Manning Bar is hosting a night of hard-hitting music as hardcore punk legends Sick of it All and Agnostic Front come to town. Both these groups have been inflicting heavy ear drum damage on punters since the 1980s and even after so many years in the game they’re still flying the hardcore flag proudly. They’re supported by Sydney hardcore institution Toe to Toe. Over at Notes, UK mod pioneers The Chords are playing a night of celebration of mod culture and music. The power pop group were known for their catchy punk vocal hooks, jagged guitar riffs and their upbeat danceable rhythms. It’ll no doubt be a night of fun as they’re supported by Fremantle’s Hurricane Fighter Plane and Sydney’s Division 4.
On Wednesday May 9th you can catch Canadian blues and roots performer Harry Manx at The Basement. He’s made a fine art of fusing blues and gospel music with eastern musical flavours, combining traditional blues playing and story telling with classical Indian ragas. On this particular tour Manx will be celebrating the release of his newest album Isle of Manx where the melding of such deeply rooted traditional musical styles is truly something amazing to behold.
