Jeff the Brotherhood: The Nashville two-piece incorporates elements of psychedelic rock, garage, punk and pop and since their schooldays have been releasing records that had limited exposure yet much critical acclaim. The duo are gaining momentum now though through their live performances both at home and abroad and they’re here playing the Big Day Out tour in support of their latest album Hypnotic Nights.

Alabama Shakes: American rock group Alabama Shakes will also be playing a Big Day Out sideshow of their renowned brand of southern rock and Americana. The four piece received three Grammy Award nominations for best new artist, best rock performance and best recording. Pretty good for a band that’s only been around since 2009.

Thu, Jan 17th, Metro Theatre

Elana Stone: Local sensation Elana Stone will be playing a show to showcase her soulful voice and incredible songwriting abilities. Stone was named Best Jazz Artist at the 2004 Musicoz Awards, won the National Jazz Award competition in Wangaratta as well as being a Montreux Jazz Vocalist competition semi finalist. She’s gearing up for a series of shows as part of the Jazzgroove Summer Festival but you can catch her warming up within the intimate and cosy confines of 505.

Death Grips: One of the most electric live acts going around right now, Death Grips, are making their way to Sydney to promote their latest albums The Money Store and No Love Deep Web. The group has successfully fused hip-hop, punk and noise; producing some dark and hard hitting music and their two records have received plenty of critical acclaim, featuring heavily in various best music of 2012 lists.

Sleigh Bells: Noise pop artists Sleigh Bells return to Australia with a fresh new album titled Reign of Terror. From a humble meeting in a Brooklyn restaurant in 2008 the duo have now toured the globe and are consistently lauded by critics. Their headline performances in Sydney and Melbourne last year sold out in no time at all and now that the Sydney Big Day Out has sold out; tickets to their sideshows will no doubt be snapped up quickly too.

Sat, Jan 19th, Metro Theatre

Dirty Projectors: The American six-piece play a brand of layered experimental rock that is not just engaging but uplifting and soulful. Since the group’s inception in the early 2000s the group has put out twelve excellently received releases and worked with the likes of David Byrne and Bjork. The band has received comparisons to a wide spectrum of artists such as the aforementioned Byrne, Beyonce, Yes and Frank Zappa.
