Little Italy improvement plans on display
The planned upgrade of Sydney’s own Little Italy is now on display.
City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone said Stanley Street in East Sydney was one of the great ‘Eat Streets’ in Sydney and that the upgrade would beautify the precinct.
‘The Stanley Street Precinct comes alive every day with the buzz of great cafes and restaurants. I’m very pleased that we can make the area even more exciting and vital with this upgrade,’ she said.
Following meetings with local residences and businesses, the city developed draft designs for the Stanley Street upgrade. These went on exhibition earlier this year and after additional feedback council presented the design proposals at a public Meeting on August 12.
The project includes an upgrade of Stanley Street between Riley and Crown Streets, with new footpath and road paving, widening of footpaths on street corners, new street trees and new lighting. The upgrade will also include burying power cables along Stanley Street, from Yurong to Bourke Street and new public art.
A William to Burton Street cycle route, along Yurong Lane and Riley Street, including improvements to the street closure in Yurong Lane at Yurong Street will also be included in the revamp.
Under the proposal, the intersection of Yurong and Stanley Streets will be improved and council is also looking into extending parking times, after lighting improvements in laneways and investigating new fences for car yards in Riley Street.
The plans can be viewed online at www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Council/OnExhibition.
Public comment closes on August 26.
