Letter to the editor: support for the injecting centre

Andrew Woodhouse claims I opposed the proposed location of the KRC’s sex workers medical outreach program in Victoria St, Potts Point (“Inject sanity, not drugs” – Letters, City News, 5 May 2011).

Mr Woodhouse is wrong. I made a submission to the City of Sydney supporting the DA. I agree with a health-based approach to helping high risk sex workers.

Documents submitted with the DA indicate that the proposed centre will provide services including STI/HIV testing and treatment, social welfare assistance and crisis counselling, and drug and alcohol counselling and referral. Unsurprisingly it will also provide access to sterile injecting equipment and provide for its safe disposal.

I agree that the impacts of the operation of the centre on the local neighbourhood should be minimised. That is what the DA process is designed to achieve.

Sacha Blumen
