Jess Miller Reelected As Deputy Lord Mayor Of Sydney

City of Sydney councillor, Jess Miller, has been reelected as Deputy Lord Mayor following a council meeting on Monday night.
Miller was first elected to the City of Sydney council with Clover Moore’s independent team in 2016 before serving as Deputy Lord Mayor from 2017 to 2021.
She will replace Zann Maxwell, who was elected last year to serve in the position until September 30.
In the coming year, Miller said she was seeking commitment on a light rail project connecting Parramatta Road to Green Square, ensuring that parts of Moore Park Golf Course are opened-up for community use, holding the Government’s Housing Delivery Authority to account, and securing major projects outlined in the City’s strategic plan, Sydney 2050 – Continuing the Vision.
“I am also very aware of how challenging it can be for young families to put down, and keep their roots firmly planted in the City,” she said. “From community sport, after school activities, easier transport to all ages gigs – I’m keen to work with the community to explore a range of solutions.”
Miller is looking to make Oxford Street affordable for young people again through the introduction of affordable housing within the East Sydney Creative precinct, and to increase the number of green laneways to help providing the city with cooling and biodiversity.
Miller also said she was becoming increasingly concerned with the ease at which developers and investment bankers can rort the State’s affordable housing incentives
“Over the coming months, I will be paying very close attention to how the Community Housing Registry is supposed to work and the detail on how (and if) the ‘affordable housing’ incentives offered via the fasttracked building approvals process will actually deliver housing that is affordable and to people who most need it,” she said.
“It would make the most sense for the City of Sydney to be exempt from the Housing Delivery Authority process – as we are already more than pulling our weight.”
Moore has every confidence in Miller’s abilities
Miller has served for five years as the Deputy Chair of the Environment Committee, and Cycling Advisory Panel, a member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Panel, and represented the City at Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils. She was also a founding member of the Climate Emergency Australia Strategic Advisory Group.
In a statement on her social media, Lord Mayor Clover Moore said she was sure Miller would serve the City well in her new role.
“Jess has been a wonderful Councillor for six years, in which time she has previously served as my Deputy and led Council’s important Transport, Heritage and Planning Committee,” she said.
“She brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and commitment to the role, particularly in the areas of nightlife and culture, placemaking and environmental action.”
Moore also thanked Maxwell for his work over the last year.
