JD LOVE – TWO DAYS

JD LOVE – TWO DAYS

A quite literal title, this album was recorded in Melbourne on the 16th and 17th of May this year. JD Love’s voice is gravelly and yet smooth and soothing. It’s not too dissimilar to Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame on his most recently released album The Blackbird Diaries. If the vocals aren’t the focal point, well then its got to be the bluesy guitar. Transitioning with ease between sweet and soft, gentle strumming to coarse and grunting blues licks. With plenty of plucking and picking causing the stings to snap against the fretboard. With both these facets ably fulfilled by Mr Love himself, its up to a mix of many other accompaniment artists to fill in the spaces. Quite wisely they have kept it to a minimum. There is little to no percussion or drumming. Just enough to keep pace. Keeping a drummer low-key is not an easy task. The double bass is able to compliment the guitar, just adding a little texture and density to the sound. The most notable and enjoyable supporting sound is the Hammond organ. It’s not used on every track but that is also part of the charm. It gives you the idea that they might have broken into a church for an after hours jam.
