Invasion Day Events
Many will take to the streets and attend local events this January 26 to protest the celebration of what is historically a traumatic day for the Indigenous population. Here are some of the events taking place.
Dawn Reflection:
The Dawn Reflection at the Sydney Opera House is an opportunity to remember the struggles faced by and contributions made by First Nations Australians and acknowledge the thousands of years of history before European Colonialism. This event will also see the Opera House lit up in Indigenous Art.
Invasion Day Rally & March:
One of the biggest Invasion Day events, this protest will begin in Belmore Park before making its way to Victoria Park. Held by the Black Caucus (formally Black Lives Still Matter), this Rally will put forward several demands, including ending health and housing discrimination, shutting down youth prisons as well as expressing international solidarity with Palestine. For more information, we suggest visiting this event’s Facebook here.
Yabun Festival:
Once the Rally reaches its destination in Victoria Park, many might choose to stay for the Yabun Festival. Running since 2003, this event looks to centre Indigenous Australia and offer an alternative to the typical Australia Day celebration. More event information can be found here.
