Work will begin this weekend at the site of the formerly-abandoned Woollahra station, where teams will assess ground conditions ahead of the planned towers over the railway.

After Premier Chris Minns announced plans to revive the station in August, Transport for NSW will be taking advantage of a scheduled shutdown of the T4 Eastern Suburbs Line, signalling the beginning of the estimated $200 million project, which is expected to begin next year for completion in 2029.

Woollahra was the planned site for an eastern suburbs rail line in the 1970s, until work stopped after cost blowouts and strong opposition from the local community.

The government hopes conditions will be suitable to construct apartment block towers over the station, similar to those in Bondi Junction and the central city, helping to meet Minns’ goal of 10,000 new homes built in Woollahra and Edgecliff.

“This station just makes sense,” says Graham

A planned rezoning of the stations at Woollahra and Edgecliff, similar to those at Burwood North and along Parramatta Road, will help clear the way for these 10,000 homes. The rezoning is expected to take about two years to complete, with plans due to be exhibited to the public in the later half of this year.

Affordable housing will also make up a proportion of the development, with the final amount set to be determined as part of the rezoning process.

Transport Minister John Graham said the work was a “back to the future moment”, with any decisions regarding over-station developments to be made furthr down the track.

“This station just makes sense when you consider the young families that are being forced to move out of Sydney because they can’t afford a home,” he said.

“About 10,000 new homes in this area is part of the solution to that problem and a rebalance from all housing growth happening in Sydney’s west.”

Transport for NSW Secretary Josh Murray said this time was critical to inform plans for the design of the station.

“These works are an important step toward delivering a station that meets the needs of the community for decades to come.”
