If (like me) you rushed in to try Guzman y Gomez when they first opened, take my advice and give them another go. They’ve tightened the menu, adjusted the chilli, improved the guacamole (to the best I‘ve tried in Australia) and added alcohol. It’s a cocktail glass of success, as is their Smokin’ Hot Margarita ($8) spiced up with chilli infused Tequila. If you can’t stand the fire, throw down a Classic Margarita ($8) and watch them smoke up their kitchen. The Beef Chilli Nachos ($9.90) have an excellent black bean mix, fresh tomato salsa, excellent guacamole and a chunky steak-rich chilli. A Steak and Onion Quesadilla ($7 / 2 pieces) is fat with tasty filling. They’ve even created a Mini Burrito ($7) that fits better in your mouth. The butterscotch-like richness of the Flan ($2.80) belies its price. If this is Mexico’s answer to the crème caramel, it’s nice to see someone put up a real challenge to the French. Staff at the Newtown store have genuine warmth and great enthusiasm for the cuisine, from the General Manager Edwardo down to the counter hand who rolls ‘burrito’ off her tongue. There are also stores in Bondi Junction, Kings Cross and Australia Square.
