GREEN BEATS

GREEN BEATS

Back in 2005 during a game of lawn bowls a group of friends decided that their favourite Sunday afternoon pastime would be enhanced if they could play along to a soundtrack provided by some of their favourite local DJs. This idea spawned the event Green Beats, which has grown to feature some of the best Australian live and DJ talent.

“The whole reason … is to get young people interested in bowls and to increase memberships to the bowling club because there have been some that have closed down due to dwindling memberships and lack of trade,” says event organiser Zac Ruokari.

Ruokari looks back fondly over the earlier instalments of the family event that have taken place at various Bowls Clubs around Sydney including Petersham and Marrickville and its current home now at Coogee Bay Bowls Club.

“Perhaps the biggest drawcard have been Itchee & Scratchee; Australian music royalty who basically came out of retirement to play at Green Beats, which was by far the most flattering and humbling event I’ve had happen to me in my life so far.”

The upcoming event features some lofty names as well, boasting veteran Australian beatmaker Katalyst, Bulgarian electronic producer Balkanzky, Sydney seven-piece afrobeat group The Liberators, as well as a slew of local DJs and producers playing everything from reggae to techno to drum ‘n’ bass.

Ruokari is proud to emphasise the beauty of the Australia Day event is in its accessibility due to its relaxed and welcoming vibe.

“[Green Beats] is a family friendly and chilled event with bean bags, music, beers, sunshine, lawn bowls and of course the option to dance.”
