GREEN BANS ART WALKS
Green bans are not only an Australian invention, but a NSW one, the first ban being put in place to protect a piece of radioactive bushland in Hunters Hill. Which is funny to think in a state riddled with developments, ever-deepening pockets of skyrocketing real estate prices and a non-stop soundtrack of drills, saws and the counting of coins behind closed doors. Revisit our more illustrious – and protective – past with the Green Bans Art Walks, as part of the Sydney Design Month this August. A collaboration between Big Fag Press, The Cross Art Projects, Firstdraft Depot, Fiona MacDonald and locals from Woolloomooloo and Kings Cross, the walks will revisit the hey-day of upheaval during the 70s through the streets of the Loo, the Cross and Darlo with guided and self-guided walks and two exhibitions. One of the last bans to be removed involves the alleged murder of activist resident journalist Juanita Nielsen in Potts Point, so it’s bound to be a pithy perambulation. (AB)
