Gillard’s move to the right will be her undoing

Lawrence Gibbons may be right that the PM will marry her partner if Labor wins the election (Poles apart: what Julia can learn from her Icelandic counterpart, July 15). While her modern image is probably one of the reasons she remains high in the popularity stakes among women, as the great debate worm confirms, she has been rapidly moving to the right on many issues.

Gillard is doing her level best to narrow the already wafer-thin gap between the two parties.

Labor and the Coalition have the same views on same-sex marriage rights; the war in Afghanistan; doing nothing for now on climate change; leaving the special building industry police force in place; supporting Israel’s attacks on Palestine; and scapegoating asylum seekers.

As she said about ALP and Coalition refugee policy in the Leaders Debate, If you drill down we have a lot of agreement here .

This will be her undoing. As one angry longtime ALP member told me on the weekend: Most of us are boat people from 1788.
