I’ve been getting into craft beer in a big way lately, so when Richard Kelsey from Artarmon’s Beer Cartel told me his store was “getting close to tipping 500 craft beers from Australia and overseas, as well as growler fills (takeaway beer on tap)” I had to ask him for a recommendation. Richard’s advice: “A beer to look out for right now is the Stone beer from Stone & Wood based up at Byron Bay – it’s a limited release beer they do each year, brewing the traditional way it was done in the Middle Ages. It essentially involves dropping heated stones (especially brought back from Fiji a few years back) into the boil to draw out the malt characteristics further.” He tells me they tweak the recipe each year, but this year’s brew is definitely the best: “dark chocolate flavours, a dry finish… a very well balanced beer.” Might have to get myself a Stone beer…
