FLIGHT OF THE CONCORDS – I TOLD YOU I WAS FREAKY

Although they have been together for over a decade now, Brett McKenzie and Jemaine Clement only really started making their mark two years ago with the screening of their HBO series, Flight of the Concords. With the cable series taking them beyond the world of comedy festival acclaim and into lounge rooms around the globe; and we now all know that taking out the garbage is really a form of foreplay. Album number two comes from series two, and lives up to all expectations fans will undoubtedly have. Comedy is a hard gig at the best of times, musical comedy even harder. The gags must withstand the test, both lyrically and musically, one weak link and the whole structure can tumble miserably. Flight of the Concords know their targets and hit them with uncanny regularity right in the funny bone. They can do reggae –  You Don’t Have to be a Prostitute – gangsta rap – Hurt Feelings – whimsical pop – Carol Brown – or their speciality of blue-eyed soul – Sugarlumps – with equal ease and dexterity. Everyone will have their favorite Concords line, I expect clubs dance floors around the world to be full of men all thinking the same thing (except on Oxford St) – too many dicks on the dance floor.
