FIRSTDRAFT DEPOT: CALL OUT & LAUNCH

FIRSTDRAFT DEPOT: CALL OUT & LAUNCH

Firstdraft Gallery is the longest running Artist Run Initiative in Sydney; from its first incarnation in Chippendale to its present location on Chalmers St, Surry Hills, it has dotted the cultural landscape with enclaves of emerging artists. Its newest outpost is in Woolloomooloo. “Firstdraft Depot offers studio space in a diverse, communicative peer environment,” says Connie Athnes. “At present, there is very little affordable studio space for artists of any kind in the inner city, and those just starting their career or those who make work which may not have immediate commercial value find it particularly challenging.” Firstdraft Depot signal a change to this situation, thanks in part to the support of City of Sydney accommodation grants; other ventures like Frasers (Chippendale) and Gaffa (CBD) offer similar spaces. They are looking for emerging artists to join the Firstdraft family – which includes Depot residents Big Fag Press and Blood&Thunder. Applications close July 30, and it’ll be worth the effort – not only do you gain access to space, but also in-house services, skills development (workshops and exposure), and a place within a vibrant local community, “Which in itself is a diverse and active,” says Athnes. Go along to the opening day on July 24 if you need further convincing; there will be a performance by artist Justin Shoulder, kids workshop, studio tour and free BBQ.

Depot launch Jul 24 12-2, applications close Jul 30, 13-17 Riley St, Woolloomooloo, 9698 3665, firstdraftgallery.com/depot
