First beach party for Mardi Gras

First beach party for Mardi Gras

For the first time ever on Sunday March 1 Bondi Beach and Waverley Council welcomed Mardi Gras partygoers at the inaugural Beach Sexy party at the Bondi Pavilion.

The need for new Mardi Gras events prompted Bondi Boys organisers Victor Hoeld and Alex Greenwich to approach the council with a proposal to bring Mardi Gras to Bondi Beach, attracted by the international appeal of Bondi Beach and the iconic Pavilion Building.

Greenwich said he was excited at the idea of a beach party to celebrate Mardi Gras.
“For a city known for its beaches it’s about time,” he said.

The entertainment included top local and international DJs as well as Courtney Act. Beach Sexy also helped raise money for the Gay and Lesbian Lifesaver group “Life Savers with Pride” who provided an exclusive preview of their Mardi Gras Parade routine at the event.

The party was received well by the Gay and Lesbian community, even though the event was held on the same day as another Mardi Gras event, Harbour Party.

“The feedback we received is that people want a new style of event. Many people have been to Harbour Party before and they want a change and everybody loves the idea of a celebration right on the beach,” Greenwich said.

It helped that newly-crowned Mr Gay World, Max Krzyzanowski of Ireland, left behind the winter to attend Beach Sexy with his friends Mr Gay World Australia, Ben Edwards, and Mr Gay World NZ Reece Karena.
