Fines go to help sick kids

Waverley’s road safety mascot, Bee Safe Buzzy Bee, was on hand to help Waverley Council present a cheque for $18,433 to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The money comes from fines imposed on drivers parking illegally in school zones from January to April 2009.

Mayor Sally Betts said child safety was a high priority for the council which was using the donation to highlight the link between legal parking in school zones and child safety.

“So far we have donated $27,379 to go towards buying equipment to help sick or injured children,” the mayor said. “Although we are delighted to be giving this money to such a worthwhile cause it is frustrating to think that parents and carers are putting their own children at risk by not parking safely. It’s important we all drive and park safely, particularly in school zones. We must do everything we can to keep our children safe.”
