Festival of the Winds turns 30

Festival of the Winds turns 30

Australia’s largest kite flying festival, Festival of the Winds, celebrates its 30th birthday at Bondi on Sunday September 14.

The skies will be alive with hundreds of kites of all shapes and sizes from local and international kite-makers and flyers from 11am to 4pm. Look out for the hand-painted silk pieces of ‘flying art’ from this year’s international guest, Asghar Belim from Rajasthan, whose beautiful kites display traditional motifs drawn from Indian culture.

Kites from the Australian Kiteflyers Society members will also be showcased as well as kite designs from India, Malaysia, China and Japan.

Anyone can join the fun.  If you don’t have a kite you can buy one from stalls in the park, or make your own at one of the kite-making workshops. If you fancy the experience of flying yourself, try a ride on the Pacific Fly Motion Bungy trampoline.

A multicultural entertainment program in the Pavilion Courtyard Amphitheatre will provide music and dance, and free music and dance workshops.

For children there are also rides, face painting, an animal farm, wandering minstrels, jugglers, stilt walkers, puppeteers, clowns and craft workshops.

A selection of multicultural food stalls will offer food and drinks from all over the world, and there’s also a good old-fashioned sausage sizzle.

Don’t forget a visit to the Bondi Pavilion Gallery, which will host an aerial art exhibition. The gallery will be open daily from 10am-5pm.
