Ever ready comic act

Award-winning comedy writer, improviser and comedian, Dave Bloustien, 33, has accomplished a lot in the last 13 years and he’s not about to slow down now.

The Bondi-based funnyman is currently performing in PULP 2 – Kings X Confidential at the Fusebox Theatre in Marrickville.

The production is made up of improvised comedy acts based around pulp fiction-style characters.  Bloustien said he was very excited about the show.

“One character I’m working on is called Bobby ‘Two Times’, as in ‘two time loser’. He’s a really nice guy who keeps getting in trouble for stupid crimes and winding up in jail,” Bloustien said.

But that’s not all Bloustien has on his plate. He is scheduled to appear at the Theatresports Cranston Cup Grand Final at the Enmore Theatre on December 5. The competitive comic game show is in its 25th year and is the biggest event on Sydney’s improvisation calendar.

Bloustien is one of last year’s reigning champions and said although he will have to defend his title, it’s all for fun.

“On any given night I’ll end up worming my way into half the other teams’ scenes, so we’re all winners really,” Bloustien said.

He is also set to perform at the annual official spin-off show, Kosher Theatresports at the Bondi Pavilion on December 6.

“It’s a community event really; full of shtick and half the audience knows somebody on stage,” Bloustien said.

The comedian promised that in his upcoming performances audiences can expect to see comedy never performed before and that they’ll never see again.

“That’s what’s great about impro; it’s made up on the spot and not repeated. So if you miss it, you really miss it,” he said.

Performing isn’t Bloustien’s only talent.  He is a part of the award-winning writing team on Channel Ten’s Good News Week and has written for ABCTV’s The Glasshouse, The Side Show and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Great Debates.

Sometime between performances and writing for television, Bloustien has also found the time to start putting together a new stand-up show called Complete History of Western Philosophy.

“My goal is to keep as busy as I have with impro and comedy and not lose out on time with my family,” Bloustien said.

He lists some of his career highlights as performing at the Edinburgh Fringe and the World’s Funniest Island festivals. Included on his list is the Moosehead Award he won earlier this year for his one-man non-fictional show The Social Contract.
