EVENT: SICHUAN HOT! & ART GALLERY SOCIETY NSW FUNDRAISER

Promoting China’s increasingly ‘white hot status’ in the global art scene, serving up spicy, steaming dumplings alongside lychee cocktails, and with wise words coming from curator Nick Veckers and QCA Gallery director Simon Wright, this exhibition cum fundraising event sounds like a veritable yum cha banquet. It’s all in aid of supporting the Art Gallery Society of NSW (the chapter dedicated to art enthusiasts) as well as to give you a taste test of contemporary China’s finest visual creatives, namely those hailing from Chongqing City. The Guardian (UK) called it the ‘invisible city’ as so few people have heard of it, and yet as it teeters on the brink of mass urban regeneration, an exploding population and slowly disintegrating feudal structure, it could be the perfect site to witness the tussle between the old and new China. See the words painted on the wall before the rest of the world catches up this Thursday at Ray Hughes gallery (and enjoy some authentic cuisine while you’re at it).

Thu Oct 8, 6.30-9.30pm, Ray Hughes Gallery, 270 Devonshire St Surry Hills, $35-45, bookings essential, 9225 1878 or contempo.org.au
