EDWINA BLUSH – SEA FOR CATS

EDWINA BLUSH – SEA FOR CATS

Singing cat-woman Edwina Blush has unleashed her latest smooth jazz offering Sea For Cats upon us and it’s a loungy affair that is characterised by boss nova grooves, cabaret jazz and Blush’s sultry and breathy vocals. Sea For Cats is fun and imbued with Blush’s sense of humour and a sense of silliness as exemplified by tracks such as Dogs; where Blush’s able vocal delivery is punctuated with purrs and meows that are reminiscent of Eartha Kitt and the Catwoman she portrayed in the 1960s Batman television series or Cafe Au Lait, where Blush enlightens us with sexual euphemisms associated with coffee. Hardly earth-shaking subject matter but certainly eccentric story telling; and the lightheartedness is infectious and balanced by the more sensitive songs on the album such as Beautiful Tale – sung over dreamier slow bossa groove – the heartfelt ode to her passed grandmother In My Own Time (Ballad Of Ina Brown) or Baccy Weed which condemns tobacco cash cropping as a method of African economic exploitation. Sea For Cats is a personal journey through Edwina Blush’s thoughts; as though she’s poured the contents of her private diary out for listeners to discover. You might just like what you find.
