A driver who reached speeds of more than 140km/h in a street race in Sydney’s south and killed two young boys has been jailed for more than a decade.

Jimmy Martin Brito drove his Subaru Impreza dangerously between Botany and Monterey while he had two boys, aged nine and 10, and a nine-year-old girl in the vehicle in August 2023.

A video taken by one of the children in Brito’s car showed parts of a street race against an Audi which took place over a distance of 8km.

Children can be heard squealing in the background while Brito revved the engine and sped down the street.

CCTV from a nearby house showed Brito losing control of the Subaru and crashing into a tree in Monterey.

The two young boys died, while the young girl was injured but survived.

Brito pled guilty to two counts of manslaughter by criminal negligence and one of causing bodily harm.

Judge calls fatal street race crash ‘horrendous’

“It is in some ways a miracle only two people died in the collision – as horrendous as that clearly is,” Judge John Pickering said, as reported by 9news

“In one respect… It was a show-off between the two of them,” the judge said.

Judge Pickering said that Brito must have been aware that his driving was so dangerous that “”inevitably people at most risk were the three young passengers” in his car.

Brito was found to have “truly abandoned his responsibility as a driver” by driving in a “competitive show-off fashion” Judge Pickering said, as reported by Newscorp.

Young car crash survivor can ‘never forgive’ driver

The surviving girl told the court that watching two of her best friends die in the collision had “changed her life forever”.

“I’ll never be able to forgive him for what he has done,” she wrote in an emotional victim impact statement.

The 34-year-old has been sentenced to 11 years and six months behind bars with a non-parole period of eight years. He will be eligible for parole on August 25, 2031.

Police allege Brito was racing Adam Yurun, 24, at the time of the fatal crash.

Mr Yurun has pleaded not guilty to aiding and abetting manslaughter and will face a trial later this year.
