Looking for the heart of Thursday night? After a moment of horror as I sought out the Cleveland Street entrance, I found it above the Crown Hotel! Yep, it’s a little bit of heart and a rather fancy thirteen-buck cocktail list from young bartender-to-watch Boo Savage; served in a pub, smack bang in an area dominated by hipsters and their high hip pocket spend. You do pay a Thursday night cover, but it’s returned in spades in the slightly saucy fit-out, generous roving platters of canapés, and credible five-piece jazz band, trotting out recognisable tunes. To get into the swing of things, Boo’s Da Vinci ($13) boasting honey, ginger and lychee liqueurs, is basically your easy-drinking, kiss-your-cold-goodbye winter therapy cocktail. If you’re out to impress, try the Fire & Ice ($18) from the ‘Dome Flamboyant’ range. The five extra bucks buys you a flaming passionfruit in an interesting, fruity drink built on Belvedere Citrus and Galliano. While the sit-down dining room facing the musicians looks classy, it trots out generously plated pub classics, like Grilled Flathead ($19) and Lamb Shanks ($18), with a sneaky standout of feisty Grilled Tiger Prawns ($11) thrown in. The wine list will also surprise in this spot where “coupon people” can win.
