WHERE TO GET YOUR FILM SCREENED

Caught Short

Like Kino, Caught Short is  a place where film makers can screen their work, and meet other filmmakers. Caught Short takes place at the TAP Gallery, Darlinghurst, on the first Thursday of every month.

Newtown Flicks

Newtown Flicks holds a yearly short film festival showcasing the best submissions they receive from around Australia.  They also produce a collection of local short-films.

Kino

Kino takes place every month in Chippendale, just off Broadway. Anyone can make and show a film on the night, as long as it follows the Kino rules (available online).

Harold’s Shorts

Harold’s shorts takes place 8 – 10pm every Tuesday night at the Harold Park Hotel, in Glebe. Anyone can submit a film, but only 6 get shown per evening, with the “most deserving film” winning $100. Entry is free on the evening.

BooHoo Films

Beginning in April next year, the Newtown based BooHoo will be holding monthly competitions culminating in July with cash and prizes for filmmakers. Submissions are open now and must no longer than 15 minutes.

Tropfest

Tropfest takes place in Sydney, and is the biggest short-film festival in the world. Anyone can enter, and the competition is usually fierce! Deadline for entering is January the 6th, and all submissions must include a reference to “KEY”. Tropfest is also holding a Mobile Masterpieces competition.

ReelAustralia

ReelAustralia is a competition run by the Film Institute and Australia Day Council of NSW. The challenge, to produce a 2 minute film that creatively shows the “Reel Australia”. The prize; $5000 and VIP tickets to attend the 2011 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards.

Movie Extra Webfest

MOVIE EXTRA WebFest is your chance to make your own seven part web-series. Create a 60 second trailer, upload it to the Webfest’s facebook, and get your friends to vote it to the top. Submissions close on November 15. The winner will get $50,000 to make their series a reality.

Screen and Media (Cert IV, or Diploma) at TAFE NSW

The TAFE NSW Screen and Media courses are reliable, hands on, and affordable. By the end of the course students will have made their own short film.

AFTRS is based in Fox Studios, and offers a variety of short courses on everything related to film.
