DEAR TIME’S WASTE – SOME KIND OF EDEN

Second full-length album from Aucklander Claire Duncan is a glimpse down the rabbit hole to her electronica wonderland. Some Kind of Eden is characterised by prevalent electric clicks and pulses, Duncan’s ghostly, magical lyrics and conscious phrasing of textures to create an enclosed sonic world. Citing early work of The Cure as a mentor, third track Fortune is exemplary of the album’s style. Building on a softly oscillating layer of synth, echoed guitar and Duncan’s melancholy yet barely strained vocals, a sudden drop opens to a labouring tempo, a soft sense of foreboding form crashing drums and nervous percussive clicks, and an ever-so-escalating urgency steaming off Duncan’s yearning lines. An album that will uncover deeper layers with each playing.
